Robyn Stacey: Cloud Land

“Imagine stepping inside an artwork. Imagine stepping inside a camera. Imagine seeing your world turned upside down.”

Robyn Stacey’s Cloud Land is a photographic exhibition like no other. Here, she reveals some of Brisbane’s most familiar places from buildings to landscapes and landmarks using one of the oldest photographic techniques – the camera obscura.

This old photographic technique which was invented more than 1,000 years ago is Latin for “dark room”. This means that in a dark room or a box a small hole is placed to let light through.

For this exhibition, Robyn Stacey used a room and turned it into a camera obscura. For the photos, she used a long exposure time which means that the camera’s shutter is open for a long time while capturing the image. This explains why only a few people can be seen smiling in her photographs. But if you look closely, some clouds are blurry. This is due to the long exposure time as well as the cloud’s movement that can’t be stopped.

Once you step into Robyn Stacey: Cloud Land, you will see all the photographs of the outside world in a dreamlike manner inside the room.

If you are ready to discover the beauty of Brisbane in a unique manner, visit Robyn Stacey: Cloud Land at Museum of Brisbane. The exhibit started last September 18, 2015 but will be open until April 3, 2016 from 10am to 5pm. Admission is free.
