Have you ever seen prosthetics used as a canvas for art? If you want to, now you can.
Spare Parts culls together a slew of artists all of whom uses pre-loved prosthetics as a canvas.
It all began in 2010 when Priscilla Sutton – an amputee since 2005 when her right leg had to be amputated to remove a degenerating bone condition – decided to recycle her old prosthetic legs. The result became a popular exhibition at Brisbane Powerhouse and later on at the 2012 London Paralympics.
The Spare Parts exhibition not just recycles pre-loved legs and arms to become stirring artworks, it also aims to generate open and positive conversation. It also celebrates the use of prosthetics.
Priscilla puts any limb donations to use via a small project that aims to give back to the amputee community. Ten artworks will be displayed at Brisbane Powerhouse. All of these can be purchased for $200 each. All profits from Spare Parts will be donated to COPE – COPE has provided tons of prosthetics and orthotics for more than 13 years to people who have been injured by cluster munitions or unexploded landmines in Laos. Every artwork sold will buy a minimum of three new prosthetic legs for Laos’ amputees.
2013 artists to be featured at Spare Parts include Bec Peart and Martin Pedder of Blackbird’s Emporium, Anke Catesby, Benjamin Werner, Elisa Jane Carmichael, Clarissa Bones for Raw Bones, Josh Rufford, Erica Gray, Elisa Jane Carmichael, Rachael Waith and Kerri Hobba.
Spare Parts will take place on August 20 to September 15, 2013 at Brisbane Powerhouse. It is located at 119 Lamington Street New Farm QLD 4005 and is a quick drive from our 1 Bedroom Apartments Brisbane.
