Brisbane River

Climb, bike, walk or abseil through Brisbane River’s cliffs, gardens and riverside parks.

Brisbane River is south east Queensland’s longest river. It flows through Brisbane city and empties into Moreton Bay.

The river serves as a backdrop for a slew of fun outdoor adventure. Kayak past the glittering sky-line of Brisbane. Climb on the Kangaroo Points cliffs or roller blade, bike and/or jog over Brisbane Riverwalk’s floating walkways.

After all that adrenaline-pumping activity, have a break in the lush riverside parks of South Bank or the City Botanic Gardens.

Brisbane River is also an ideal place for a paddle. Kayak and canoe tours are organized by qualified instructors. Make sure to apply sunscreen when you take a lunchtime tour past the glass skyscrapers, green parks, historic buildings and old wooden homes.

Make sure to experience the city’s magic as it is lit up during the dusk or evening. Story Bridge’s bejeweled silhouette is also a must-see.

Come dawn, enjoy a perspective of Brisbane from the top of the bridge.

During the day, feel free to go on a picnic underneath the mangroves of the City Botanic Gardens. Cruise the river via a golden gondola or wooden historic paddle steamer.

Trip Advisor Senior Contributor “2Eliza_12” recommends visitors to “Try the CityHopper.”

“A great way to rest those tired legs! We rode on an hour and half trip on the river from NorthQuay for FREE! take the Red City Hopper. The captain and the lady assistant were very entertaining!”

Trip Advisor Contributor “Rodkat” describes Brisbane River as “Vibrant, lively, beautiful and functional, it unites the city.”

“Once called the upside down river, it now has the stylish and fast citycats to move people around. Flanked by walkways, eateries, pubs and parks the riverside has something for everyone.”

However, Trip Advisor Contributor “unhappycamper255060” describes Brisbane River as “smelly and brown.”

“Smelly and brown. Nothing really to like here... nothing special about it at all. Not really sure what else to say.”

Senior Trip Advisor Reviewer “Ernie G” also saw the river as `not clean as it usually is.’

“The river on Sunday was a hive of activity with cats running frequently for passenger river trips and jet skis. The river was not as clean as it usually is but is probably the after effects of recent floods and the mud bottom.”
